Made famous to millions as a backdrop in the film Baahubali, Athirappilly Falls is Kerala's largest waterfall and one of the most spectacular sights in the state. Here is everything you need to plan a visit.
About Athirappilly Falls
Located in the Thrissur district on the Chalakudy River, Athirappilly plunges around 80 feet at the edge of the Sholayar forest ranges. The sheer width and volume of water — especially after the rains — have earned it the nickname the "Niagara of India." Its cinematic setting has featured in several films, including Baahubali.
Best time to visit
The falls are at their most powerful during and just after the monsoon (roughly June to January), when the Chalakudy River is full. The surrounding forest is greenest in these months too. In peak summer the flow reduces, though the setting stays beautiful.
How to reach Athirappilly
Athirappilly is roughly 60–70 km from Kochi and easily reached by road, making it a popular day trip from Kochi or a stop between the coast and the hills. The nearest major airport is Cochin International Airport.
