Most people picture Kerala under blue skies — but ask a local and many will tell you the monsoon is their favourite season. Here is why travelling to Kerala in the rains is underrated, and how to do it well.
When is the monsoon in Kerala?
Kerala gets two spells of rain: the southwest monsoon from about June to September (the main season), and a lighter northeast monsoon around October and November. Kerala is famously where India's monsoon first arrives.
Why visit in the monsoon?
- Everything turns green. Tea hills, paddy fields, and forests are at their most vivid.
- Waterfalls are full. Athirappilly and the hill-country falls are at their thundering best.
- Fewer crowds. Popular spots feel calm and unhurried.
- Better value. Off-season rates on stays and houseboats are common.
The Ayurveda season
There is a reason Kerala's Ayurveda resorts stay busy in the rains. Traditionally, the cool, humid monsoon — known locally as the Karkidakam season — is considered the ideal time for Ayurvedic treatments and rejuvenation, when the body is thought to respond best to therapies. A monsoon wellness break is one of Kerala's most authentic experiences.
Where to go
Great monsoon choices include misty Munnar, green Wayanad, the Thekkady spice hills, and a covered Alleppey houseboat gliding through rain-fed backwaters.
Monsoon travel tips
- Pack a light rain jacket, quick-dry clothes, and grippy footwear.
- Keep the itinerary flexible — some hill views come and go with the mist.
- Protect cameras and phones; carry a dry bag.
- Travel with a local operator who can adjust plans around the weather.
