Planning your Kerala trip

When is the best time to visit Kerala?

October to March is the most comfortable time, with dry, pleasant weather. The monsoon (June to September) is lush, green, and quieter, and is also the traditional Ayurveda season.

How many days do you need for Kerala?

Five days covers Munnar and an Alleppey houseboat; six days adds Thekkady wildlife; seven days adds a beach finish at Kovalam or Varkala. Most first trips run five to seven days.

Is a Kerala houseboat worth it?

For most travellers, yes. An overnight private houseboat through the Alleppey backwaters is a highlight of a Kerala trip, with meals cooked onboard and a slow cruise past village life. One night is usually enough.

Is Kerala good for a honeymoon?

Yes. The mix of private houseboats, Munnar hill stays, and quiet beaches makes Kerala one of India's most popular honeymoon destinations, and it is comfortable for much of the year.

What is Kerala like in the monsoon?

The southwest monsoon (June to September) brings heavy but often intermittent rain, very green scenery, full waterfalls, and fewer crowds. It suits travellers who want lush landscapes, Ayurveda, and better value.

Do I need to book a Kerala houseboat in advance?

In peak season (October to March, and especially around Christmas and New Year), the better houseboats book out early, so it is worth confirming a few weeks ahead. Off-season is more flexible.

India circuits & seasons

Is December a good time to visit India?

Yes — December is peak season across much of India. The south (Kerala, Goa) is warm and pleasant, Rajasthan and the Golden Triangle are cool and ideal, and Kashmir and Himachal offer snow.

When is the best time to visit Kashmir?

April to October for gardens and green meadows, and December to February for snow in Gulmarg. Spring also brings the tulip garden in Srinagar.

When is the best time for the Golden Triangle?

October to March, when Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur have cool, comfortable weather for sightseeing. Peak summer (April to June) is very hot.

When can I see snow in Manali?

Solang Valley near Manali usually has snow from about December to February. The Atal Tunnel gives year-round access to the higher Lahaul valley.

Choosing between destinations

Kerala or Kashmir for a honeymoon?

Choose Kerala for warm, relaxed backwaters and beaches year-round, and Kashmir for cool alpine scenery, lake houseboats, and (in winter) snow. Both are among India's most romantic destinations.

Kerala or Goa for a beach trip?

Goa is better for lively beaches and nightlife, while Kerala's beaches are quieter and part of a wider backwaters-and-hills trip. Choose Goa for a dedicated beach-and-nightlife holiday and Kerala for a more varied, relaxed trip.

Kerala or Goa for New Year?

Goa has the livelier New Year's Eve with beach parties, while Kerala offers a quieter, scenic celebration — Fort Kochi's carnival, a beach resort, or a houseboat. Both are festive; it depends on the vibe you want.
