Where it is: past Emerald, near Avalanche
Destiny sits deep in the Nilgiris at Muligur Village, Emerald Post, roughly 22 km from Ooty town - about a 90-minute drive. It is close to the Emerald Dam and the Avalanche area, one of the greener, quieter corners of the hills, well away from Ooty's busier center.
We reached by evening and parked at the resort's parking area. From there you don't drive down yourself - the resort runs its own off-road transport to the property. That short off-road ride is part of the fun, and the first clear sign that this is a genuinely tucked-away farm rather than a roadside hotel.
The property: 125 acres by the lake
Spread across 125 acres, Destiny is a working farm resort with 42 well-appointed rooms, many of them looking out over the lake and the dam. The rooms have wooden floors, warm interiors, and a cosy sit-out facing the water - a rustic-but-comfortable feel rather than a generic hotel room.
What sets it apart is that the farm is real: there is a dairy farm, a stable with horses, and produce grown on site that finds its way to the kitchen. It genuinely feels like staying on a farm in the hills, with the lake in front of you.
What we did: treks, a naturalist, and a soft trek to Sundance
The resort leans into its setting, so there is plenty to do without ever leaving the property. Over our two days a highlight was a gentle, soft trek to an old bungalow the team calls Sundance - more of an easy walk than a hard climb, comfortable for most fitness levels, with lovely views along the way.
What made the walks special was the resident naturalist, who joins you and talks through the birds, animals, and plants of the Nilgiris. It turns an ordinary trail into something you actually learn from - a real highlight for us.
Beyond trekking, the property offers horse riding, fishing, a tour of the farm and dairy, rappelling, ziplining, day camping, and the naturalist-led nature walk. There is more than enough to fill two unhurried days.
The food
Food was a genuine highlight of the stay. The multicuisine restaurant, Wishbone, cooks with fresh farm produce and has both indoor and outdoor seating, and there is a coffee shop for something more relaxed. Meals felt fresh and generous - exactly what you want after a morning on the trails.
Why we'd call it a two-night place
If there is one piece of advice, it is this: don't do Destiny as a one-night stopover. Between the off-road arrival, the treks, the farm, the naturalist walk, and simply slowing down by the lake, two nights is what lets the place unfold. That is what we did, and it felt just right.
Best time and how to fit it into a South India trip
The Nilgiris around Ooty are pleasant for much of the year and coolest and mistiest in winter, so pack a layer for the evenings. Destiny slots naturally into a wider Nilgiris or South India itinerary - pair it with Ooty and Coonoor, and add a Kerala leg through Munnar and the Alleppey backwaters for a hills-and-farm circuit across two states.
