Kashmir is a year-round destination, but it changes character completely with the seasons — from spring tulips to summer meadows to deep winter snow. Here is a clear, season-by-season guide to the best time to visit Kashmir, so you can match the trip to what you want to see.
The quick answer
For most travellers, March to October is the best time to visit Kashmir — pleasant weather, blooming gardens, and green meadows. If your dream is snow and skiing, plan for December to February in Gulmarg instead.
Spring (March to May) — blossoms and tulips
Spring wakes the valley up. The famous Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar typically blooms for a few weeks from late March into April, alongside almond and apple blossom. Days are cool and fresh — a beautiful, less-crowded time for gardens and photography.
Summer (June to August) — the peak season
Summer is the classic Kashmir season: Mughal gardens in full colour, the meadows of Gulmarg and Pahalgam at their greenest, and comfortable daytime weather while the plains swelter. It is the most popular time for families and honeymooners, so stays fill early.
Autumn (September to November) — golden chinars
Autumn turns Kashmir's chinar trees deep red and gold, especially around Srinagar and Naseem Bagh. Crisp air, thinner crowds, and gorgeous light make it a quietly spectacular — and underrated — time to visit.
Winter (December to February) — snow and skiing
Winter blankets the valley in snow. Gulmarg becomes one of India's top ski destinations, with the high Gulmarg Gondola running over powder slopes. It is cold and some routes can be weather-dependent, but for snow lovers it is magical.
