Manali is a year-round destination, but the experience changes completely with the season. Here is a clear guide to the best time to visit Manali and the wider Himachal hills.
The quick answer
March to June is the classic season — a cool, pleasant escape from the plains. For snow, plan December to February; for clear skies and thinner crowds, October to November.
Summer (March to June) — peak season
Warm days on the plains make the Himachal hills a favourite escape. Solang Valley, Rohtang (when open), and the river valleys are at their most accessible. Book early, as it is the busiest time.
Monsoon (July to September)
The hills turn lush and green, but heavy rain can trigger landslides on mountain roads, so travel needs a flexible plan. It is quieter and cheaper if you are willing to be adaptable.
Autumn (October to November)
Crisp, clear air and golden light make autumn an underrated time — comfortable days, fewer crowds, and great mountain views.
Winter (December to February) — snow season
Solang Valley usually has snow for snow play, and Manali turns wintry and cosy. Some high passes close, but the Atal Tunnel keeps Lahaul accessible.
